Running a test multiple times with @RepeatedTest

Overview

In this lesson, we'll explore the first of many approaches of JUnit Jupiter in regards to executing a test method multiple times with different inputs. Using @RepeatedTest instead of @Test, a single test is launched more than once. The number of executions can be controlled through the annotation's value property.

A @RepeatedTest should be preferred for tests that would otherwise use a for-loop to perform assertions with int-based inputs, because the test reports will display bugs in the tested code with greater visibility, since a new entry is generated for each invocation of the @RepeatedTest inside the report.

Summary

  • Use @RepeatedTest instead of @Test for tests that should run more than once
  • Add a parameter of type RepetitionInfo to the annotated @RepeatedTest method to gain access to the current and total invocations of it
  • A @RepeatedTest generates an entry for each value from 1 until the total invocation count inside the test report
  • The name of the generated test methods can be configured with the @RepeatedTest annotation, too (use {currentRepetition} and {totalRepetition} as placeholders for the respective numbers during execution)
